The powers of Grendel laid not in what abilities he/she/it could employ, but in the sheer longevity an independent comicbook character could endure thru the ages. Appearing to the public for the first time in 1982, the anti-hero lasted nearly 2 decades into the present, the last time I've seen him was in the sequel to the Batman/Grendel crossover in 1996.
